Challenge

A decades-old monolithic warehouse could not meet new real-time regulatory reporting requirements. Overnight batch windows were overrunning, and analysts waited hours for queries that should take seconds.

Approach

We designed a medallion lakehouse on Delta Lake, migrated workloads incrementally behind a compatibility layer, and introduced streaming ingestion for the highest-velocity feeds — all while keeping the legacy system authoritative until cutover was proven safe.

Architecture

Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2 with Delta Lake bronze/silver/gold layers, Databricks for transformation, Event Hubs + Structured Streaming for real-time ingestion, and Unity Catalog for governance and lineage across the estate.

Results

Query latency dropped 94%, real-time regulatory reports became feasible for the first time, and infrastructure cost fell 60% by retiring duplicated batch pipelines.
